White Space Art Asia presents “Locious: The Universe of Now,” a solo exhibition by Javanese artist Galih Reza Suseno. This evocative collection explores critical issues of climate change and sustainability through the lens of ancient Indonesian lore. Inspired by the loss of his childhood village to urbanization, Galih’s work seeks to reconcile the gap between humanity and the environment, inviting viewers to imagine a world where nature and mankind exist in blissful harmony.+3
At the heart of this series are the “Locious,” a cast of characters representing Genius Loci—the guardian spirits found in every river, tree, and hill in Javanese culture. Each character personifies a natural element: Ranu (Water), Riku (Earth), Shoku (Fire), and Shu (Air). These whimsical figures act as mediators in the liminal space between human civilization and natural landscapes, fostering a renewed sense of reverence for the elements that sustain our existence.+4
Galih’s distinctive style is characterized by an “icing-like” texture created with modeling paste, a technique inspired by his childhood memories of decorating cakes with his mother. His method of stippling paint to add dimension draws from Impressionist and Pointillist movements, resulting in idyllic landscapes that echo the fantastical storytelling of Studio Ghibli. Ultimately, “The Universe of Now” maintains a hopeful outlook, envisioning a future where nature is treated as an equal partner rather than a mere resource.
